Alderney Channel Islands Britain
July 2008
By Linda Thalman
Sailing out of Cherbourg in France our two cabin boat 'Blues' took us from France to the lovely island of Alderney in Britain.
The evening before heading to Alderney we did a quick tour at 11 in the evening just outside the port of Cherbourg to check out the boat.
Little did we know that our Saturday departure would be basically windless and arriving at Alderney we'd be engulfed in what the locals just called mist.
It was stronger than mist to me, yet not exactly 'thick' fog either.
In any case, we cruised around the harbor and finally tied up to another boat that was leaving as soon as the mist lifted.
Then we took the harbor taxi with an expensive 3 euros per person per trip price to the island and explored.
Up we went to St Anne, the capital of the island, looking in shop windows and taking a short break for a cool drink.
The tourist office was most helpful and we found a fairly large supermarket and then the lovely Marais Hall pub for traditional and oh so delicious and exceptionally large portions of cod fish and chips.
Remember in the UK: you go to the bar in pubs, pay for the drinks and take them to your table.
Then it was a hike downhill to the little train at 15:00 for the 10 minute ride to the Alderney lighthouse.
I climbed the 120 steps up to the top of the lighthouse for a lovely view. The mist had lifted; our guide said one hour one didn't have a view at all.
It was then back down the 120 stairs and a 5-minute walk to the train to the harbour.
We took another break to quench our thirst. It was, indeed, nice and warm on our weekend break to Alderney and finally we took the taxi (another 3 euros each) to our boat to relax.
We used the taxi rather than inflating our dingy and rowing as we didn't have an outboard motor, which we should have had... so it goes.
Four of our crew went back to the island for an excellent dinner at the Bumps restaurant. Lobster and fudge with ice cream for dessert come highly recommended at this eatery at the harbour.
We left the lovely harbor and wended our way towards Cherbourg.
Anchoring a couple of hundred of meters from the smallest port in France before reaching our home port, we dove into the cool - almost cold - water that was ever so freshing on a very hot day. Salty it was and also memorable.
Finally arriving back in Cherbourg at our spot numbered 93 it took us nearly two hours to pack up, clear the decks and clean up our boat.
Pierre and I left at 21:15 from Cherbourg and arrived home in Boullay five hours later in a torrential summer rain storm that had built up from the 30 degree Celcius heat during the day.
Do visit the Channel Islands. They are charming. The locals are so friendly and you'll simply forget your cares and woes.
