Bretagne sud - South Brittany - Belle Ile
July 2006
Brittany needs weeks and weeks of time to explore. It is so beautiful.
We - myself, partner and 5 friends - spent a fabulous week sailing around just a small part of South Brittany on a 14-meter long boat.
The weather was outstanding, though perhaps not quite enough wind as we were only able to put up the spinnaker on one afternoon for less than an hour. But what a sight.
Our home port was Port-Crouesty on the tip of la presqu'île de Rhuys between the Morbihan Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean.
Crouesty is a huge pleasure craft port with shops and more shops, bars, restaurants, holiday homes and apartments and a lively Sunday market.
One day we toured around the Morbihan, another trip was to Quiberon. Then a visit to Houat and Hoedic Islands. And a most lovely sail all around Belle-Ile staying in le Palais one night and another in Sauzon.
Crepes and more crepes are on the menu in Brittany, as is sea food, of course. While we cooked most meals on our boat, we did enjoy pleasant food in modest restaurants.
The nicest restaurant was Le Goéland at 3 quai Vauban in le Palais. With balcony seating and a view on the port at sunset, with good service, food and wine - what more could you want?
Visiting Brittany on a boat gives you a different perspective from hiking, biking or driving around this region.
Next time we must return to explore even more by land or by sea one of the most gorgeous regions of France.
