Brittany - Bretagne: Pont-Aven France
January 2009
Pont Aven is a charming town in Brittany. Today it is full of galleries, the beautiful Aven River which runs through the center of town down to the port.
There are lovely shops, restaurants and ever so quaint views.
One can easily see why painters like Paul Gauguin loved this town and area and why painters today are inspired as well. Myself included!
My visit was very brief on a Sunday afternoon on a bitter cold January day with my friends Tiphaine, Anne and François.
The near freezing temperatures did not stop us from looking in the windows and shops. It was not, however, a lazy stroll, which it could and should be on a warmer day.
It was just one of those late afternoons with lovely light.
In gallery windows I saw delightful, vibrant, interesting paintings.
And in Galerie Dominique C I pushed the door, perhaps a bit to go inside to warm up, but also to get a closer look at the stunning paintings on the ground floor.
Upstairs there were more delightful paintings and I was so taken with Gwen le Grand's work that I came home with one as a birthday present for Pierre.
Gwen Le Grand is from the area and studied at the School of Fine Arts [Ecole des beaux-arts] in Quimper.
I was so struck by her style and originalily that I had to have one of her paintings.
Pont Aven is absolutely to put on your 'to visit' list when in Brittany.
From the Pont-Aven web site, I quote:
"In the 19th century, Pont-Aven was a small commercial town known for its mills and its port. It has always inspired artists, and American painters began arriving here in 1865."
"Bro Goz ar milinou, Baradoz an Arzou, "Vieux pays des meuniers, Paradis des artistes", Pont-Aven vous invite à découvrir la beauté de ses paysages, la richesse de son histoire d'amour avec l'art et les artistes
