Les Baux-de-Provence in France
By Linda Thalman
Having visited les Baux in 1976 it was really a long time ago that we'd been there and
it was amazing to wander about trying to remember what we'd seen before.
In 1976 we stayed in a small hotel in the valley, paying triple our student budget at the time.
This trip it was totally the luck of the draw... we arrived around 18:30 after an eight-hour drive
from Boullay. Our stay was short... just over night but we enjoyed sunset and sunrise. Perfect.
It was 13 C upon leaving the 'north' and down 'south' it was 35 degrees... that means hot!
We zigzaged up the roads to Les Baux and, thanking our lucky stars,
the parking closest to the village was libre and it was just 200 meters from
the Hostellerie where we stayed.
The Tourist Office was already closed and we'd not booked ahead.
Well, Hostellerie de La Reine Jeanne had a room for 70 euros with a gigantic
patio. The patio had a view to die for and was three times the size of the room.
What views -- the old town, the valley and almost all the way to the Med..
Dinner on the patio at the Hostellerie was perfect and the service absolutely tops.
Les Baux is not all that big... 900 meters long and 200 meters wide. You can visit
in a couple of hours easily. However, if the temperature is in the mid-thirties in the
middle of August and there are a zillion other tourists... well, you see what I mean?
If visiting in the high season, arrive VERY early and I mean very early to see the sun
rise and find a close parking spot. It is 'touristy' but what a pretty village. Just enjoy.

Montparnasse - Paris
Linda Thalman
One part of Paris that you might not know to well is around Montparnasse.
Montparnasse has an office tower building built in 1973...
the only tall one in the confines of Paris.
Do spend some time visiting this non-touristy part of Paris which
administratively is in the 6th, 7th, 14th and 15th arrondissements.
When coming by car, we use the underground parking lot of the Tour Montparnasse.
When coming by metro, you'll pop out of the tube and be on the Place 18 Juin 1940.
There's a nice shopping mall under the Tower, the Montparnasse Train station is near by, the
rue de la Gaite, the Montparnase cemetery, rue Raspail Boulevard Edgar Quinet are all
close by.
Cinemas, restaurants, little shops, book stores, theaters -- it's a hustle bustle kind of place.
I find it a very lively part of town with a good touch of Parisian life where Parisians have
coffee at the cafes, enjoy drinks at the bars and take in life day and night.
Corsica - France
You just must include Corsica in your travel plans. You'll need a bit of time
and a car to get around, but it will be well worth it.
On this trip we arrived in Bastia by ferry from Genoa and headed off to Calvi straight away.
The drive through the mountains and on to the coast was stunning. Over hill and dale,
around corners, down and up curves with grab the door grip before it is too late
kind of driving.
And stop now so I can take a photo, says Pierre. Then stop now again for
another great view or pull over to let the speeding locals pass us by. We're tourists,
thank you very much, merci, gracias, Danke!
In Calvi, of which I have a superb poster by Jose Lorenzo, we booked into our hotel
and headed for the port.
The main street is a real tourist avenue, I must say.
At the port, as the sun was setting, we had a long drink and just relaxed in comfortable blue
cushions as the heat was finally cooling off. Ouuf.
I wasn't too keen on climbing the stairs to the old town at 7 p.m., but good thing we did.
While the old town is not overly quaint, we found an especially nice restaurant
with a view on the bay which was so pretty!
The next day we took our time, driving up and down the central mountains of
Corsica on our way to Corte in the heart of Corsica.
With great luck we parked a few meters from the Hotel du Nord
on the main street of Corte late in the hot hot hot afternoon.
Great advice from reception said don't even think about driving to the upper town...
it's just a 10-minute walk.
Taking the local advice, we did just that and hurried to visit the Regional Museum
before it closed.
The next morning we left early to get to Bonifacio for our ferry to Sardinia.
It was a piece of cake and we enjoyed the views of the bay and dozens and dozens if
not hundreds of pleasure craft and tourist boats zipping in and out of the narrow bay.
There were some super big yachts

Catching the Limit
By Mark Thalman
http://www.markthalman.com/
Catching the Limit by Mark Thalman, from the Northwest Poetry Series, is yes, written by my brother
and I unabashedly mention it and hope you'll buy a copy.
His poems "Born in Oregon", "Newport", "Oregon Rain", "Odell Lake", "Eagle Rock", among others certainly have
personal memories for me.
I'm so proud of my brother and I'd also like to share two quotes about Catching the Limit.
"Your collection is alive all the way through: I got a great read out it! Certain things stay with me, especially --
the trip over Highway 20, and the sun through the high church window when the blast clears..."
William Stafford, Poet Laureate of the United States
"No one understands better than Mark Thalman the "ancestral messages"
of landscape in his native Oregon, gathered here from a lifetime of attentiveness.
Like river stones in a jar of water, glistening in the sun, his poems remind us
of what endures. They will hold you steady, return you to the origins of wonder."
Ingrid Wendt, Editor, From Here We Speak: An Anthology of Oregon Poetry

Paris Fractional Ownership - Paris Property
By Linda Thalman & Glenn Cooper
It's a hot topic in property circles. Does fractional ownership ring a bell?
Whether it does or doesn't, if you would love to own part of a property in Paris,
you'll want to be in touch with Glenn Cooper.
Glenn regularly contribues mouthwatering reviews of Paris restaurants - and he is also a
long-time expert on Paris rental property and property investing.
Glenn writes:
"As one of the owners of our upscale fractional ownership properties, you will select a specific,
permanently assigned usage period during which the residence will be exclusively yours for as
long as you own the property. You may choose four consecutive weeks, or two periods of two weeks each.
During your usage period, you may use your Paris home yourself, or offer it to your family, friends
or business associates."
