Giverny - Monet Gardens & Musée d'Art Américain
By Linda Thalman
Orininally published in July 2005 - Updated January 2009
I've been to Giverny numerous times and it is always a treat.
No matter what the season or weather from April through October, you'll be snapping photos of water lilies, flowers, the Monet house and more.
Save plenty of time for the really excellent gift shop after wandering around the gardens and through the amazing house - which is simply a walk-through and not a guided tour.
Tour groups have a separate entrance and a coach/bus tour may be a good way to do Giverny if you are not driving a car in France.
If you are under your own steam, I strongly suggest you arrive around 9:00 or 9:15 in the morning to be there for the 9:30 opening time. Tour buses usually arrive around 10:00.

"The Musée d'Art Américain was opened in Giverny in 1980 to explore the historic and aesthetic connections between French and American artists.
This village, home to the the impressionist Claude Monet, was the location of a popular American artists' colony at the turn of the nineteenth century.
In Giverny many of these artists began to experiment with the impressionist aesthetic - the results of which contributed to what has become a long-lasting link between the art of France and America."
Do take the time to also visit this lovely museum - with its permanent collection, temporary exhibits and its own gardens.
You'll not really have seen Giverny without visiting the American Art Museum.
I'd suggest you have lunch at Les Nymphéas restaurant just across the street from Giverny gardens.
Perhaps book ahead of time or when you arrive if it is in the morning. If you come for lunch and then visit, think of getting a table between noon and 12:30.
With my brother and sister-in-law we had a lovely meal on the terrace in the sun! Perfect.
