London - Paris - London on Eurostar
May 2008
By Linda Thalman
A day trip from Paris to London is absolutely doable.
The Eurostar from Gare du Nord in Paris to St Pancreas train station in London takes just two and a half hours.
I've spent more time than that in traffic jams from southwest Paris to the northeast of Paris!
We left home in Boullay les Troux at 6 in the morning. We parked at the Gare du Nord train station just before 7 am.
There was just enough time for a coffee and then on to customs and passport control.
Yes, you need your passport and your bags will go through a scanner.
And wow, no time to wait around. Down the ramp, walk along the quay for about 4 minutes to the number one voiture at the head of the train. This was in second class with reasonable leg room. More than in "cattle class" on airlines!
Two and a half hours later we were at St Pancreas smack dab in the middle of London. We barely had time to read a few newspapers, have a nap and a coffee to wake up.
Our train did stop briefly in Calais and a suburban London station. A 100% direct train would have been about 15 minutes faster.
But, my or my it's it fantastic to be in London at 9:30 in the morning having left at just after 8:00 a.m. from Paris?
There's that lovely time difference which means it was 10:30 in France but an hour earlier in the UK upon arrival.
We visited the Dickens House Museum not far from Bloomsbury first of all. There's a short video about Dickens, you visit the house and see lots of photos, furniture, books, displays and more.
Then on to Knightsbridge by underground... street traffic was horrendous, so we gave the idea of a taxi a miss.
Travel Tip: Buy a one day tube/bus pass. If you take two journeys by tube or bus you'll have saved money. A one way tube journey was a whopping, exhorbitant four pounds sterling. Ouch.
Lunch was at a pleasant and welcoming Lebanese restaurant not too far from Harrods... and we didn't even have time to nip in and shop at one of the most amazing shops in Britain. Next time.
We had 45 minutes in a big bookshop at Picadilly and then had to catch the tube back to St Pancreas for our 18:00 train.
We arrived in Paris at 21:00 - it's that time difference again.
Driving out of Paris to the suburbs in the evening was easy and we were home in Boullay by 23:00.
If you have an apartment or hotel it Paris, you'll be able to stroll the Champs Elysées for a nightcap following your day to London rather than driving back to the suburbs.
So do it. Have a day out to London.
