Rouen - Normandy - France
October 2009
By Linda ThalmanIt's been ages since I'd been in Rouen and it was a lovely afternoon to visit in late October.
The city is lively and so full of charm.
We'll have to go back again soon to visit the Fine Arts Museum, the Ceramic Museum and others. There's so much to see.
We had lunch at what is perhaps the oldest inn in France: la plus vieille auberge de France.
La Couronne was registered in 1345 on the most ancient bill of sale found to this day.
It is so charming, with excellent food, service and a warm welcome.
Almost every square inch of the walls are covered by photos of famous people who've eaten here.
Julia Child's photo from 1949 is in the entry hall... I touched it!
La Couronne is now recently more famous because of one of the first scenes in Julie & Julia, the film, which I've seen twice and written about in Julia Child's book, My Life in France, which I've read twice. Yet to read is Julie Powell's Julie & Julia which the film is based on.
We chose the 25 euros set menu for our delightful lunch. Starters were warm foie gras for Pierre and terrine for me. Followed by onglet for me and a risotto with squid for Pierre. We both had the warm banana dessert with ginger flavors.
We splurged on a red 1999 Graves, Château Tour Bicheau wine and had kir with aligoté wine while we studied the many seasonal dishes on the menu.
The bill came to 105 euros, which is a bit steep for lunch, but we were celebrating Julia Child's memory and our visit to the most lovely city Rouen.
Rouen is filled with hundreds and hundreds of timbered houses, the majestic cathedral, other churches and the beautiful Justice Palace.
Do put Rouen on your 'to visit' list. It's splendid.

Rouen is also the "Town with a Thousand Spires", and over the centuries different parts of the town blossomed with jewels of religious architecture. Notre-Dame Cathedral inspired Monet to paint his Cathedral series."
