Tunisia - April 2007
By Linda Thalman
Our destination in Tunisia was decided by the choice of my partner for a tennis course... and we ended up in Hammammet Yasmine.
The Royal Hotel where we stayed promotes itself as a 5-star hotel.
Our suite was lovely with not one but two terraces with a pleasant view on the sea.
The service was very haphazard. Sometimes excellent and sometimes just pathetic.
Hotel food at the evening buffet was simple lamentable... the soup and fresh strawberries were about all we could stomach.
However, a 5-minute taxi drive away to the marina (with taxi prices being very, very reasonable - 3 to 5 Tunisian dinars) for a choice of several nice, though not extraordinary restaurants, fast foods, crepes, pizzas and so on.
The marina is a building site and was very noisy at lunch due to lots of construction.
The evenings were more calm and in April, they were looking for customers... most of the tourists must have been eating at those awful buffets in the hotels.
Pierre enjoyed his 5-day 'stage' with 3 hours training each morning from 10:00 to 13:00... which with temperatures hovering at 20C was perfect.
In the warmer months, that is when the thermometer hits 35C or more, the tennis class would need to start at 7 or 8 in the morning.
There are 3 lovely swimming pools at the Royal Hotel and a beach as well, but the water temperature was at about 16 degrees C and we only put a toe in the pools and the sea. Cold!
There is a heated indoor pool, but it was full of kids.
We rented a car for 3 days and had lovely afternoon trips exploring the area.
Tunis is worth the visit if only for the most extraordinary museum of Roman mosaics I have ever seen.
My top tip is to fly to Tunis and visit the Bardo Museum.
Simply stunning beyond belief.
I have never seen so many beautiful mosaics in one museum.
Among the best in the world I would say. Guide books say the best in North Africa, but wow and double wow.
Don't miss the Bardo Museum!
Tunisia in the spring is green and vibrant and everywhere people are helpful and friendly and welcoming.

Site in French, but do look at 'salles' for views of the collection.
